ANKARA  LEPROSY RESEARCH  AND TRAINING  CENTER

PLACE

Ankara Leprosy  Research and Training Center is located in Cebeci Campus of Ankara University Medical School. The Center has an inpatient service with a capacity of 30 beds, 20 for men and 10 for women and includes haematology, bacteriology and biochemistry laboratories.

Examination, therapy and following up of leprosy outpatients are done by Ankara Leprosy Dispensary located in the same building. Where Ankara Leprosy Relief Association continues to work as well.

HISTORY

Ankara Leprosy Relief Association was established by Assoc.Prof.Dr.Etem UTKU in  June 1 st 1957.  The Association  constructed  the building of the Ankara Leprosy Research and Training Center at the Cebeci Campus of Ankara University Medical Scholl and began working on March 9th 1963.

In accordance with  the agreement made by Ministry of Health in May 4th 1962, treatment and follow up of Leprosy patients also started in Ankara Leprosy Dispensary in the same building.

The aim of  Ankara Leprosy Research and Training Center is to make research studies  in all aspects of leprosy, to  educate the intern doctors, resident physicians and students of health institutes, and  to organise national and international congresses and conferences on leprosy.

In 1964, antileprosy campaigns were held in Elazýð, Erzurum, Kars, Van, Aðrý and Hakkari.  During one of these case finding surveys ,  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Etem Utku  died in an accident happened on Van- Baþkale road. After his death, Prof. Dr. Necmettin Gürhan, Lawyer Necip Alayeli, and Prof. Dr. Ahmet  Akçaboy have elected respectively to become the president of Ankara Leprosy Relief Association.

In February 20th 1980, Prof. Dr. Atýf Taþpýnar became president by the elections and he continued working until his death in October 30th 1996. Now surgeon Bilhan Akçaboy is working as president.

Between 1984-1989 Prof. Dr. Cengizhan Erdem worked as a supervisor for scientific and academic studies of the center.

Since 1989 Prof. Dr. Nihal Kundakçý has been conducting these studies. At  present Dr. Kundakçý is the head of Ankara Leprosy Dispensary and the president of Ankara Leprosy Research and Training Center.

ACTIVITIES

1.Activities  of Ankara Leprosy Research and  Training Center
The Center has an  inpatient capasity of 30 beds, 20 for men and 10 for women. In this center, examination, treatment and follow up of leprosy patients are performed and clinical investigations on leprosy are carried out.

2.Activities of Leprosy Dispensary
Bacillary  counts and routine heamatologic and biochemical examinations and treatment and follow up of leprosy out-patients are performed in the dispensary.

3.Activities of the Surgery Unit
Surgical cosultations and operations for the leprosy patients and for the outpatients of dermatology department are carried out here.

4.Activities of Outpatient-Clinic
Dermatology out-patient clinic and mycology laboratory serves for the dermatology out-patients and for the patients of other departments.

5.Training Activities
a. Lectures given to medical school students.
Leprosy lectures are given to Ankara, Hacettepe and Gazi University Medical School students in Ankara Leprosy Education and Research Center, during their dermatology courses.
Dermatology assistant doctors ( residents) of Ankara, Hacettepe and Gazi Universities, Gülhane Military Hospital and Ankara and Numune Government Hospitals , works in the center for 1  to 3 months and are educated for both theory and practice.
Leprosy education is  given to Social Health Group students of Gevher Nesibe Health Education Instutite, for one semestr.

b. Seminars and courses given at schools and local health centers.
Between September 3th 1964 and April 11st 1965, Leprosy psychotherapy courses are given to 5 health care workers and 3 nurses. Between January 5th 1965 and November 25th 1965 leprosy courses are given to 18 doctors and 26 health care workers.
Between October 15th and 25 th 1968, leprosy courses are given to 12 doctors and 12 health care workers. Seminars are given in 1970 in Gaziantep, Kayseri, Afyon and in 1972 in Konya, Zonguldak, Muðla, Antalya and Urfa. Leprosy courses are given to 26 doctors and 25 healthcare workers in 1971 and 24 healthcare workers in 1972.
In 1973 leprosy and syphilis courses are given to doctors and health care workers in the Institute and in Denizli, Burdur, Isparta, Amasya and Tokat. In 1974 lectures are given in Van, Kars, Artvin, Eskiþehir, Bursa, Balýkesir, Çanakkale, Kütahya  and Uþak and a course for ten days about leprosy was given in the Institute.
In 1975, 20 doctors and 20 health care workers are given leprosy and syphilis courses in the Institute.
In 1976, Leprosy seminars are given in Edirne,Tekirdað and Kýrýkkale.

BULLETIN OF LEPROSY

Bulletin of Leprosy is the an  important scientific activity  of Ankara Leprosy Relief Association .
Buletin of Leprosy started to be published in 1970. This Journal is beeing publishing since 28 years and it implicates all subjects of medicine but especially leprosy.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Ankara Leprosy Relief Association organizes social meetings such as balls  and kermeses to meet the medical and social expenses of the patients.

WORKSHOPS

Upholstery and tricotage workshops are important income sources of Ankara Leprosy Research  and training center.
